The Skinny on Finny, an epilogue to the Up Finny’s Nose Series

The final book in the Up Finny’s Nose series elicited a great response from readers. Though it would have been nice to bring those characters through another few books, it was not to be. Since many folks requested more details about Ruth Budge and her life, here is a brief epilogue. Enjoy, dear readers, and thank you for coming along with me to Finny.California Capers Cover

Ruth and Monk celebrated the birth of their twins, a boy and girl. The babies, though underweight, were healthy, a blessing considering their mother almost drowned just before they arrived. Monk and Ruth settled into the glorious and generally overwhelming job of becoming late in life parents. At last notice, they were babyproofing the house with Alva’s assistance.

Ruth’s son Bryce recovered from his head injury and settled in Finny. He became the manager for Monk’s Catering, and under his leadership the business thrived, allowing Monk to stay home more with his budding family. Bryce eventually developed a deep affection for Dimple and her daughter Cootchie. He proved to be a gentle father figure to Cootchie and there is talk of a double wedding in the near future for Bryce, Dimple and another dear couple.

Bobby and Jack are to be married in the fall. Bobby has not yet found a position as a park ranger close enough to Finny to suit her, so she helps out at Monk’s Catering and lends a hand with the twins. Jack remains in charge of the Finny Police Department. His son Paul has made great strides to overcome his selective mutism and Jack hopes for a full recovery.

And Alva? What happens to the irrepressible octogenarian newspaper boy? He is the self appointed “ninny”  to the twins and longs for the day he can introduce them to the wonders of the candy world. He still delivers the Finny Times and treads on Maude’s primroses whenever the opportunity presents itself.

  1. I really enjoyed reading all three Finny books, and I am disappointed that there will not be a fourth. I love your sense of humor and I fell in love with your quirky characters. Thank you for allowing God to use you to write Christian suspense books. There was just enough mystery and peril to keep my interest, but not too much gore. I like a good mystery, but I don’t like to fill my mind with vivid death scenes. Your books have a good balance.

    • Thank you very much, Susan. The Finny books have a special place in my heart and I’m sad the series ended too! Blessings. Dana

  2. The Finny series was a great source of all emotions from hilarity to tears. I am so glad to see the update of the characters. It is too bad you could not continue to write about them.

  3. Dear Dana,

Thanks so much for your email directing me to the Finny epilogue. It was a perfect ending. I would still love to see some more Finny novels and I know many other of your fans would be thrilled. You are a very talented writer! I love Christian novels that don’t kill off anyone I get attatched to and that have a great, satisfying ending. I don’t need a reality check when I am reading for enjoyment. There is enough trouble in everyday life. Your book, California Caipers, was everything I love in a book. Can you suggest another Christian writer similiar to yourself? Will you write another series?

    Thanks So Much!

    Cathy

    • Thanks so very much, Cathy. I enjoyed writing the Finny series more than anything else I’ve written to date. I am very pleased that you liked it. The Heartsong Mystery line featured all Christian cozies. You might enjoy the books from Candice Miller Speare, Susan Paige Davis and Anita Higman. Thank you for your kind note.

  4. I really liked the Finny books. They showed me gentleness and acceptance in a new way. The quirky characters thrilled my humor-love, also. You filled a gap in my reading life with these mysteries. Thank you.

    • Thank you, friend. Your kind words lifted me up today. Dana

  5. I’ve just finished my second reading of the three “Finny’s Nose” novels. Sigh!
And with the epilogue I can now set them aside until next year. Yes, I will read them again.

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed them, Judy!

  6. I don’t understand why you didn’t write #4 with a different publisher..but guess it could be. 😦 BUT YOU DIDN’T TELL US THE NAMES OF THE TWINS!!! But I am great-full to find the epilogue!! Thanks for giving us that much!! Love your books!!

    • I’m glad you liked the books, Evie. I miss writing cozies too. What do you think the names of the twins would have been? Dana

  7. Thank you so much for emailing me the follow-up! Maybe something will come along & you can finish the series. The very best to you & yours.
    Blessings upon Blessing to you-
    Rozzie

    LOVE THE TOWN OF FINNY!!!

  8. Dana, I just this minute finished “california Capers” and found the epilogue! This was the “funnest” read I’ve had in a long time! I completely fell in love with the characters with Alva being the all time favorite! Its so great that you found such gentle ways of weaving our precious Lord into these entertaining stories…just like real life! Thanks for sharing yourself with the rest of us! Blessings, Betsy

    • I’m so very pleased that you liked it, Betsy. Alva is one of my favorites too. I’m working on recording a podcast of a funny mystery with a character named Lucille who reminds me a lot of Alva. Thanks for taking the time to bless me with your note! Dana

  9. You are truly blessed of God with your talent of writing. And it was awesome of you to put up and epilogue of what happened because i really wanted to know waht had happened to Ruth’s twins thank you so much and Gods richest blessings on your life.

    • Thank you kindly, Phillipa. I so appreciate your sweet words. I loved that Finny series as well and I would have enjoyed writing many more! Thanks for leaving a comment!

  11. I loved the Finny books also and I have flashback and some more of your books, really enjoy the way you write.

Check out my blog as I am now doing reviews and really love it.

    • That’s great, Edna! What is your blog address? Would love to check it out! 🙂

  12. I just finished reading the California Capers. I laughed out loud so many times. I loved Alva and his pet name for Ruth. His character has helped me as I have started discipling a women who does not comprehend very easy, and I was encouraged as I read how Ruth treated him and at times depended on him. It has given me a whole new outlook and to not treat my lady any different than I would any one else. Thank you so very much for this book, it was God’s timeing for me. I also am thankful for the epilogue but would love to see a book or series of each family. Thank you again you are a wonderful writer,

    • Thank you so much for writing, Joyce. You blessed me with your kind words this morning, friend.

  13. My best friend lent me the Finny Trilogy and I was hooked. And a little sad to see them end. Isn’t it amazing that one can grow so fond of characters! I’ll always have a soft spot of Alva.

    • Riette, thank you for your kind note. I was sad to see that series end, too. Alva was one of my favorites! God bless.

  14. May I inquire WHY there will be no more Finny books? Do you not want to continue the series, or is something preventing you from doing so? Just wondering why you’d let a good story die.

    • Hey, Donna. I’m glad you liked the story. The folks at Barbour decided to discontinue their Heartsong Presents line so that was the end of the Finny’s. I would love to write another cozy series sometime, but I seem to be caught up in suspense at the moment. Thanks for commenting! 🙂

  15. I just finished reading California Capers and loved the stories about Finny. Like everyone else, I was disappointed that there were no more books in the series so thank you for the epilogue. I am a subscriber to the Love Inspired Suspense line so I often am treated to some of your books. Thanks again!

    • Thank you for emailing, Kathy. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the books! I was sad when that series ended too!

  16. I too am a teacher. Currently I hold the stressful positions of full- time substitute teacher with my local school district and Driver’s Education Instructor for a commercial school here in town. There’s material for a few novels in there, but I ‘ m not sure where I would begin. Instead I read lot of “cozies” at night before falling into an exhausted sleep after a stressful day of subbing. They contain just the right balance of quirky characters, great storytelling, intrigue, and life affirming scripture.

I have read many of the Heartsong Presents novels and am greatly saddened to find out that Barbour has decided to discontinue that line. They fit so well into my stressful life, giving me a much needed reprieve while encoraging me and inspiring me through humour and the realistic struggles of the characters. I hope they will reconsider! I read at least one or two per week and I am running out of titles to buy! I need these in my daily routine so I can fill my mind with good thoughts that allow me to relax and go to sleep at night.

Finally, l have to say that out of all the cozies I have read so far, your Finney series has been my favorite. I can really identify with Ruth and her midlife struggles with regrets versus God’s promises. Thank you for providing the epilogue and I hope someday you’ll be able to write more Finney stories. Meanwhile, I’ll quench my literary thirst with California Capers.

    Sincerely,

    Benita Badje,
    McKinney, Tx.

    • Gosh, Benita! You really do have two high stress jobs! My big girl is just 15 and I’m already petrified thinking about her learning to drive.

Thank you for your very kind words about the Finny series. I am so pleased that you liked them. I also was saddened to hear that they would not be continuing the mystery series. Benita the California Capers book is a compilation of all three Finny novels so you won’t be finding anything new there, I’m afraid. I would be happy to send you a complimentary copy of Bye Bye Birdie. That’s a little short story (cozy) I wrote that you might enjoy. Thanks again for your kind words!

  17. I just finished reading the California Capers and I needed to know if there was an epilogue so was thrilled to find it. It would have been so much fun to have read the on-going story of these incredible characters. They were so entertaining and kept me turning pages quickly to find out what was going to happen next. The characters were lovable and the mysteries were hard to figure out. Very great writing on your part for sure. I have bins of new books I haven’t read and my husband doesn’t understand my joy of reading. While reading my assortment of books, I am exercising on my stationary exercise bike. If it’s a good read, like your book was, I exceeded my limit/day of miles so had to read in other places around the house. Thank you for your great talent and the great characters you created. These are the kinds of books I could read forever and ever. It brightens my days to read about these adventures and takes me away from some of the medical stresses that have been facing our family and close friends. It’s a reason to keep perspective and renew my faith in God. I’ll have to try another of your books in the near future. So glad it caught my eye in my last book order. What a special gift you have!!! Keep up the good work.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Bonnie. I am so thrilled that you liked the books. I always pray that my words will lift someone up and your lovely note made me feel so happy. Thanks for blessing me today, friend!

  18. I am disabled, in a wheelchair and don’t get out much so I do a lot of reading. My mother just loaned me California Capers and I absolutely loved it! I feel like I have alked the streets of Finny with your characters and was sad to see that this was the end. Thanks so much for the Epilogue, I was wondering about Ruth and the babies and the rest of Finny’s inhabitants. I hope someday you are able to write more Finny stories.

    Good Bless You,

    Debbie Hadden
    Vidalia, Georgia

    • I am so pleased that you enjoyed the Finny series. It was lovely of you to message me. I wish you blessings, Debbie. 🙂
